The Horror Thriller Genre

 Brief analysis of Teaser Trailers

Both teaser trailers employ the conventions of horror thriller trailers using suspense, tension and excitement as key elements to create unsettling movies that attempt to elicit the emotions of dread, disgust and dismay from the audiences. With powerful tag lines such as “Believe In Him” and “Bad Things Happen For A Reason” it gives the audience a clear suggestion of what the movies are about and how the plot will unfold.

Research into distribution companies

Our respect and admiration of film is formed by our knowledge at the cinema. Distribution is the third part of the film supply chain, is often referred to as 'the invisible art', a process known only to those within the industry, barely written about and almost imperceptible to everyone else. Yet questionably, distribution is the most significant part of the film industry, where finished films are brought to existence and connected with an audience. The phases of production, distribution and exhibition operate most effectively when 'vertically integrated', where the three stages are seen as part of the same larger process, under the control of one company.

Key visual analysis of film websites

Recently I have seen Devil and The Last Exorcism, personally I feel as thriller horror films they ticked most boxes which are seen to complete them as films, however there are many plot changes I would make. For instance I would give more back story to the “Devil” character in Devil and show past events he has caused and highlight all reasons as to why, similarly in The Last Exorcism it is very similar to its predecessors and could have possibly been more successful if parts were more intense and creative. In the synopsis I would include things such as information as to why both movies came about and emphasize key pivotal moments in each. Both sites for each film emphasize the horror thriller genre and have influential, powerful images which then cause the audience to become intrigued about the methods which the directors and actors may have used in the creation of the film. The visual looks of each of the website a black, red, use of the trailer. It is clear from the sites that the age range for each film are young adults and that the gender is unisex, with no indication towards it being directly aimed at one gender. However many horror thriller films are aimed towards males due to the drastic amount of gore and fear which is included and inspired. Interactive features on each site are that of links to social network sites, competitions, locating cinemas which are showing the film, watching trailers and key moments in each film and critics opinions of the films. All of these allow the audience to participate in the films and encourage interest. The website for The Last Exorcism has the opportunity to allow you to submit an e-mail address for further information on the film, where as Devil does not have anything where to submit an e-mail address. This may have been done to raise more interest into the movie, causing the audiences to go see it to find out more. Create mystery, raise interest into the film, be memorable, clear image of what the film is about.
Shouldn’t be too confusing or long, not give away everything in the film.

The Last Exorcism –
  • Last hints that there’s been many before and this may be the most important or effective one
  • Exorcism highlights the spiritual and supernatural elements within the film
Devil  -
  • Devil shows clearly that it’s about a supernatural demon which has malevolent purposes and only wishes to cause pain (reflecting the general idea how Devils are seen)
Each films title were very effective at selling the film to the audience, as it allows the audience to gain full understanding of the films purpose and intentions. Both titles are reflective of their film, both in capital letters and with clear images of the film displaying constant an impression of the films intent and ideas. Images such as the lift button being a V in the title emphasize where the film is set and its malicious intent.
I would say that the key ways I would hear about a film would be through the internet, cinema, TV, radio as it’s what’s most applicable to me and interests me as a person. You can tell the quality of different cinemas through their websites, for instance cinemac has a very basic, one page black and white website which has few images and cinema listings and times.
